We got the leadership score A- in CDP’s Global A list.
The first company to achieve the best A-class energy efficiency classification for elevator installations, according to the ISO 25745.
100% of the electricity consumed at KONE’s corporate head offices and our manufacturing and R&D sites in Finland, Italy, and the Netherlands is green electricity.
Calculating our products’ energy use and enabling green building construction. We publish the environmental impact of KONE products and contribute to developing global energy management standards.
Considering the environment when installing new equipment. Our well planned and efficient installation processes minimize the adverse environmental impacts of installation work, and our systems ensure we reduce our chemical use and handle waste efficiently on site.
Using smart technologies and a green vehicle fleet to minimize emissions and maximize efficiency. Unnecessary technical callouts are reduced by remote monitoring solutions and by KONE 24/7 Connected Services, which uses the IBM Watson IoT platform and other advanced technologies to bring intelligent services to elevators and escalators. By carrying optimized spare part stocks in our vehicles we reduce warehouse visits, further decreasing emissions.
Applying a range of solutions to make the biggest difference with the lowest possible environmental impact. Our modernization solutions range from retrofitting LED lights to a completely new elevator with energy regeneration technology.
KONE has been measuring its operational carbon footprint since 2008. Our aim is a 3 % annual reduction of CO2 relative to net sales. Between 2008 and 2017, we have managed to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint relative to orders received by well over 60% (calculations include Scope 1 direct energy and cooling gases as well as scope 2 indirect electricity and district heat).
Logistics operations were the major source of greenhouse gas emissions in KONE’s absolute carbon footprint, accounting for 50% of our operational greenhouse gas emissions. We only use distribution models that take eco-efficiency into account, and we pay special attention to reducing the impact of transportation through route and shipment optimization, as well as through careful analysis of alternative transportation models.
Of KONE’s operational greenhouse gases in 2017, a third was emitted by our global vehicle fleet, making it the second biggest contributor in terms of our greenhouse gas emissions. We continuously search for new and innovative ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our vehicle fleet, for example by paying attention to fuel efficiency, piloting electric vehicles, and monitoring driver performance.
KONE has over 1,000 facilities globally, including office spaces and installation and service operation hubs. Our Global Facility Policy aims at developing fit-for-purpose facilities and eco-efficient operations. Our goal is to reduce facility-related carbon footprint, and we are constantly looking for ways to further improve space efficiency, optimize energy usage, increase the share of green electricity, and reduce waste and improve recycling, among many.
